As the summer comes to a close, I sat down with Mike Rowehl at Cafe Borrone. Over a cup of joe, we mulled over the mobile landscape. Two topics stood out: Open Source and Network Convergence. With this post, I hope to start a conversation around these themes leading to events.
Open Source is making a big impact in the mobile space. The leading edge of Linux devices are now available as a development platform. Qtopia's Greenphone and Nokia's 770 are good examples. Of course, there are challenges and gaps. How is the standardization effort for Linux API (i.e., UI, messaging, etc) progressing? Other projects of interest are Asterisk and Funambol. Are there other significant open source efforts should we be exploring?
A family of internet protocols (SIP, RTP, XMPP , etc) now enable voice applications. VoIP is a well know use of these protocols(e.g., Gizmo Project ). This allows us to blur the line between traditional telephony applications and the internet. Many IM applications also feature voice(e.g., Google Talk and Yahoo! messenger).
Let's explore these themes. What topics are most interesting? What's the right scope? What format is best suited for them?
